Hydroseeding Information
What is Hydroseeding?
Hydroseeding (also called hydraulic mulch seeding or hydro-mulching) is a planting process that uses a slurry of seed, mulch, fertilizer, and water sprayed over prepared ground. The mixture creates an ideal germination environment, protecting seeds from erosion and drying while providing nutrients for rapid establishment.
How Long Does Germination Take?
Germination time depends on the seed type, weather, season, and watering schedule. Under normal conditions, you can expect to see grass sprouting in 5 to 7 days. Cold weather or extreme summer heat may slow germination by a few days. Consistent watering is the most important factor in a successful hydroseeded lawn.
Watering Instructions
After hydroseeding, keep the area consistently moist — not soaked — for the first 3 to 4 weeks. Water lightly 2 to 3 times per day in warm weather. Once the grass is established (about 2 inches tall), you can transition to a normal watering schedule. Avoid heavy foot traffic until the lawn is fully established.
Cost Comparison
Hydroseeding typically costs less than 1/4 the price of sod installation, and produces comparable results within a few weeks. Compared to dry seeding with straw mulch, hydroseeding is cleaner, faster, and produces a more uniform lawn with no weed seeds introduced from straw.
